How to Find the Best Fitting Scrubs

Wearing scrubs to work probably makes getting ready in the mornings a little quicker and easier.

You don’t have to think long and hard about what to wear that day or wonder if your outfit choice is appropriate for the office. And if your scrubs fit right, you get to be comfortable.

But that is the problem - they don’t always fit right.

Scrubs are often large, long, and itchy

But they don’t have to be.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to make your scrubs fit better by slightly altering them and how to purchase a pair that fits you just right when you’re ready.

How Can I Make My Scrubs Fit Better? 3 Ways to Have Nice Fitting Scrubs

If you wear scrubs regularly, you probably own multiple pairs. They might be too big, too long, or too uncomfortable. And you might not have the time or money to buy an entire new scrub wardrobe.

Luckily, there are three simple ways you can have the best fitting scrubs without having to replace every pair.

You can:

  1. Make minor alterations to your scrubs.

  2. Learn how to appropriately shrink your scrubs.

  3. Measure and understand your body type to learn the scrub type that will fit you best.

1st Way to Have Better Fitting Scrubs: Alter Your Existing Scrubs

Many medical professionals probably already own scrubs for work. The scrubs might have been purchased in a hurry or passed down to them from coworkers, friends, or family.

But because they weren’t purchased for your exact body type, they might not be good fitting scrubs.

By making simple alterations, you can make your current scrubs fit better and avoid purchasing all new ones.

Take Nicole, for example.

Nicole is a nurse at a hospital and is required to wear purple scrubs every day. Nicole does not already own purple scrubs, so she accepts two pairs from a coworker until she decides where to purchase her new scrubs.

Unfortunately, the borrowed scrubs don’t fit quite right.

Nicole wonders, “How can I make my scrubs fit better?” while she’s waiting to buy her own.

If you’re like Nicole and in need of new scrubs, consider Silver Lining Scrubs. We offer high-quality, warm, comfortable, and well-fitting scrubs for medical professionals.

How to Alter Scrub Tops

If your scrub tops are too big, you can alter them using:

  • Pins

  • Chalk pencil or water-soluble marker

  • Needle and thread

  • Scissors

Here’s what to do:

  1. Put your scrub top on inside-out and stand in front of a mirror.

  2. Gather the extra material at the sides and use a pin to secure the material.

  3. Pin from the bottom seam up to the armhole then down the sleeve seam.

  4. Mark the positions of each pin and remove the pins.

  5. Take off your scrub top and sew along the marked lines.

  6. Make any necessary adjustments.

How to Alter Scrub Pants

Medical professionals often need scrub pants altered because they’re:

  • Too big around the waist, or

  • Too long

You can alter your scrub pants at home with a basic sewing kit.

If your scrub pants are too large in the waist:

  1. Put on your scrub pants and stand in front of a mirror.

  2. Pinch the excess material on both sides of your hips inside the waistline.

  3. Use a safety pin, needle, or sewing pin to hold the material in place.

  4. Take the scrub pants off and turn them inside out.

  5. Thread a sewing needle with a similar color thread.

  6. Stith the pinched material so that when the pants are worn, the excess material is on the inside.

If your scrub pants are too long:

  1. Put your scrub pants on and stand in front of the mirror.

  2. Cuff the excess material at the bottom up and under the inside of the leg to the desired length.

  3. Pin the material in place.

  4. Take the scrub pants off and turn them inside out.

  5. Thread a sewing needle with a similar color thread.

  6. Stitch around the cuffed material.

2nd Way to Have Better Fitting Scrubs: Shrink Your Existing Scrubs

Jordyn is a dental hygienist and wears scrubs to work five days a week.

She is also dieting and working out which is causing her to lose weight quickly.

She already owns a large handful of scrubs and does not want to replace them until she reaches her goal physique.

Instead of wearing scrubs that are much too large, Jordyn can shrink her current scrub tops and pants to have nice fitting scrubs in the meantime.

How to Make Scrub Tops Fit Better by Shrinking

Can you shrink your scrub tops in the wash to make them fit better?

Probably.

But it depends on the material.

If your scrubs are 100%...

  • Cotton

  • Hemp

  • Linen

...they will likely shrink well in the wash.

Scrubs that are mixed blends or made from synthetic materials will probably not shrink as well as the ones listed above.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Turn scrubs inside out to prevent colors from fading.

  2. Add them to the wash with all scrubs similar in color, all inside-out.

  3. Wash in warm water (the hotter the water, the more your scrubs will shrink).

If your scrubs still aren’t small enough, you can repeat the steps above. Wash them in warmer water to have them shrink even more.

Your scrubs will probably continue to shrink in the dryer, so if you’re happy with how small they are, do not machine dry. A dryer can shrink your scrubs a full size.

To keep your scrub top from shrinking too much in the dryer, dry on medium heat. You can always repeat these steps if you need your scrub tops a tad smaller.

How to Make Scrub Pants Fit Better by Shrinking

You can shrink your scrub pants to make them fit better the same way you shrink your scrub top.

  1. Put them inside out and place them in the wash with similar colors.

  2. Wash with warm water to prevent over-shrinking.

  3. Air dry to avoid further shrinking or add to the dryer at medium heat. The hotter your washing machine and dryer, the more your scrub pants will likely shrink.

3rd Way to Have Better Fitting Scrubs: Purchase Scrubs Based On Your Measurements

Just like when you’re purchasing any article of clothing, choose the right size of scrubs based on your measurements to have the best fitting scrubs possible.

Different shapes and sizes of scrubswill fit some medical professionals better or worse than others. To ensure you have nice fitting scrubs, learn how to measure your body type for the most accurate sizing.

Learn What Scrubs to Buy Based on Your Body Shape

Knowing your body measurements will go a long way in purchasing scrubs that are comfortable and fit you the best. Different body types will feel most comfortable in different scrubs.

The most common basic body types to consider when describing your figure are:

  1. Hourglass

  2. Apple

  3. Triangle

  4. Inverted Triangle

  5. Athletic

Once you’ve narrowed down your body type, you can shop for a style of scrub that will be comfortable and flattering on you.

Don’t let ill-fitting scrubs keep you from feeling your best while at work. Silver Linings Scrubs offers high-quality, lined, and comfortable scrubs to help keep your productivity and style on-point.

How to Choose Fabric That Looks Flattering

Scrub tops and pants are usually made of one main fabric or a blend of fabrics. Most commonly, fabrics used in scrubs are:

  1. Cotton - lightweight, durable, no static electricity

  2. Polyester - synthetic, durable, wrinkle-resistant

  3. Spandex - lightweight, synthetic, durable, resistant to shrinking and stretching

  4. Rayon - mimics the look and feel of fabrics like silk, wool, cotton, linen

Choose a pair of scrubs that are comfortable for your body type, whether that be a tighter, more figure-flattering pair, or a loose, breathable, and roomy pair.

Stay warm and comfortable while at work and find scrubs that are flattering on you at Silver Linings Scrubs.
